The ship's architecture, particularly its interior design, was inspired by the looming castles of classic gothic horror cinema. The concept art by Ron Cobb depicted a Nostromo clad in grimy yellow paint, inspired by industrial equipment and the sci-fi paintings of Chris Foss. Intended to suggest its second-hand origins as a decommissioned military vessel, this version of the Nostromo was actually used for months of filming. Eventually, however, director Ridley Scott decided on a darker, gray colour scheme and had the model repainted and reshot.
